âViagra?â Chaz said. âOf course Iâve heard of it. I thought you said you were only forty-five? Now youâre trying to tell me youâre seventy-five?â
âI would look good if I was seventy-five. But when I asked if youâd heard of Viagra, I didnât mean I wanted to use it.â
âThank goodness for that. However, I have to say, I really do have a headache. Sorry.â She made a face at him before smiling.
âI can actually come round here without wanting to rip your clothes off.â
âIf youâd been here half an hour ago, you would have seen me with my pyjamas on.â
âYou had a lie-in?â
âI did. I couldnât sleep for a while. I tossed and turned, read some pages of a book, watched some TV. Had another can of lager, then finally crashed out with my fan set to freeze the balls off an Eskimo. I wish I had air conditioning like the Americans have.â
âEd says his air conditioning is having Max wag his tail in his face. But God knows how he can stand it, having his dog lie next to him in bed. I mean, itâs a double, but still. The room is small, but he doesnât mind. Itâs a roof over his head.â
âOh, the poor guy. He works hard in that guest house.â
âBob and Mary didnât ask him to; he just didnât want them to think he was a moocher.â
âHe washes the windows, cuts the grass, cleans. Heâs a marvel,â Chaz said.
âAs opposed to me, whoâs a lazy sod who doesnât lift a finger?â He raised his eyebrows at her.
âYouâre a paying guest in a guest house. Your dad wants to feel valued.â
âI know. Heâs trying to save his pension so he can add it to the insurance money to buy himself a new home.â
They sat down on the couch with a coffee. Chaz still had a couple of hours before she had to leave for her night shift starting at ten oâclock.
âI got this in the mail today,â she said, reaching for a magazine on the coffee table in front of the couch. She lifted it and took the card out and handed it to him.
He took the card out of the envelope and read it, once, twice, before putting it back in the envelope and tossing it down on the table.
âYou noticed it didnât have a stamp? It must have been hand-delivered.â
âJesus, I didnât even notice that. Thatâs even worse. They know where I live.â
âEnoughâs enough,â he said. âMaybe you should come and move into the guest house for a while. Until we get this sorted. There are spare rooms available.â
âI donât think I want to be chased out of my own home, Sean. There have been some shitty things happening to me recently. Iâm not going to run anymore.â
âWhoever it is knows your address, obviously. Just keep your wits about you when youâre out and about.â
âI will, donât worry. But youâd better scoot. I have to shower then get ready.â
âCall me at any hour of the night if you need me,â he said and gave her a hug.
